In 2006 Winchester City Council imposed parking restrictions in Lynford Avenue and Lynford Way to combat student parking in those roads. This action resulted in the students parking in Vernham Road instead.

Winchester City Council now plan to impose parking restrictions in more of Weeke including the following roads:

  • Vernham Road
  • St. Matthews Road
  • Wessex Drive
  • St. Stephens Road
  • Kynegils Road
  • Lynch Close

We are opposed to these proposals on the following grounds:

This is not a solution to the problem.

Imposing the proposed parking restrictions will only move the problem further into Weeke estate.

This is not scare mongering, it is exactly what happened when restrictions were imposed in Lynford Avenue.

Any parking issues there may be should be addressed by Peter Symonds College.

The parking problems are caused by students of Peter Symonds College (See photographic evidence).

The College have a part to play in solving these parking issues.

One resident suggests that the college should make a deal with the Council to include Peter Symonds on the Park & Ride route.

These parking restrictions are NOT necessary throughout large parts of the year.

When the college is not open, there isn't a problem (See photographic evidence):

  • Half terms (a total of three weeks)
  • Summer Holiday (six weeks)
  • Christmas (2 weeks)
  • Easter (2 weeks)
  • Every Saturday and Sunday

That's 169 days of the year when there is no parking problem.

The restrictions will apply throughout the year except on Sundays.

These restrictions apply to the residents and their visitors as well as the college students. If parking restrictions are introduced, there will be less space to park and we will all be searching for the nearest available space.
There are safety implications for the children at Weeke School. St. Matthews Road is a safe(ish) place for parents to stop to drop their children off for school in the morning. This is because the children do not have to cross the much busier Stoney Lane to get to school. The proposed restrictions will remove that safer dropping off point.
The proposed restrictions are too severe.

The proposed restrictions apply from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. This will impact on those residents who arrive home from work before 6 pm (most families with children) and have implications at weekends when residents are most likely to have visitors.

If restrictions really need to be imposed, limiting the restrictions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday would solve the problem and be much fairer to the residents.
