"I
have no quarrel with the man who has cheaper prices
for he is better placed than any one to know the value
of his product."
Ruskin.
What's It Cost?
Every video project is different and so they will all
cost different amounts. There are so many variables:
- Research (How much is required and how much can
the client provide?)
- Script production
- Number of locations
- Size of crew
- Final quality
- In-house or 'famous name' presenter / narrator
- Number of animations
- Quality of delivery format required - glossy printed
Please remember that most of the work involved is done
in the Pre-production and Post-production stages. The
shoot, the most visible part of the production, is often
the shortest part.
As a potential client, that doesn't help you much to
budget so here are a couple of examples to give you
a clue:
Example 1:
- 5 minute training video
- Half a day 2 man crew
- One day 1 man crew
- Only one day of additional research
- In house voice over
- Royalty free music
- Title graphics and credits - no other animations
- DVD quality - wide screen
- Simple cover design
Total Cost to Client: £2,490.00
Example 2:
- 30 minute training video
- Two days 2 man crew
- One day 1 man crew
- Five days of additional research
- In house voice over
- Royalty free music
- Title Graphics and Credits - one other 20 second
animation
- Broadcast quality - wide screen
- Full colour cover design
Total Cost to Client: £9,070.00
Steve Feeney Productions will work to a fixed price
but reserve the right to charge extra if the client
makes significant changes to the production or additional
shoot costs are incurred.
How Can We Keep Our Costs Down?
The best way to minimise the costs, without cutting
back on the quality, is to stay focused on the project
and work to our best practices document which is designed
to encourage a professional approach to video production.
There are other ways of keeping the costs down:
- We offer a 5% discount for permitting us to include
parts of your video on our Demo Showreel.
- Avoid commercially produced music. (a well known
song can help get your message across, but it can
also distract the viewer from your message so you
do need to think about it).
- Strive to minimise the shoot period. If the shoot
lasts more than one day, can it be arranged to have
a one man crew for some of the time? By carefully
scheduling the shoot you may be able to reduce the
number of days required.
- Animations are time consuming. Do you need them?
- Do you really need a famous name presenter / voice
over?
In the case of a special interest video, where we consider
the sales potential is sufficient, alternative funding
arrangements may be considered.
